What is Grammarly?

Spelling, grammar and tone checking that runs everywhere you type — browser, email, Word — plus rewriting and a plagiarism checker on the paid tier. Unglamorous, and the tool on this list most likely to earn its money on the first quote you send out.

The value is not the grammar. It is that it works in the box you are actually typing in, so it catches the mistake in the email rather than in the document you remembered to check.

Two settings to change immediately. British English, or it will quietly Americanise your spelling in front of customers. And Product Improvement and Training, which is on by default and is what decides whether your drafts feed Grammarly’s models.

What does Grammarly cost in the UK?

Plan Price What you get
Free £0/month Spelling, grammar, tone detection, 100 AI prompts a month.
Pro £10/month Full rewrites, fluency, plagiarism and AI detection, 2,000 AI prompts per member.
Enterprise Contact sales BYOK encryption, custom roles, data loss prevention.

What the free tier actually gets you

Free plan covers spelling, grammar and tone detection plus 100 AI prompts a month. Enough for a sole trader who writes a few emails a day.

Does Grammarly train AI models on your data?

Opt out

Grammarly's trust page states: "You can opt out of allowing Grammarly to use your content to train its models and improve its product for everyone. To do so, turn off Product Improvement and Training in your account settings." So the default is on and you must go and change it. The page does not state a separate policy for Business or Enterprise accounts. Read on 29 August 2026. Worth knowing: an automated read of this page previously returned a paragraph about a different product entirely, which is why this field is only ever set by hand.

The Torus verdict on Grammarly

Worth the ten pounds for anyone who sends written work to customers. Turn off Product Improvement and Training on day one, and set British English before it starts changing your spelling.
